I work for a small coffin manufacturer. We're based in China, but about eight years ago, a buyer from Hamburg came to us with a technical document-the German standard for burial caskets. He wanted to know if we could build to it. We said yes. And we've been building to that same spec ever since.
Let me walk you through what that actually means.
First, the joints. They're tight. No gaps, no wobble. Second, every coffin coming off our line has the same outer dimensions. That sounds boring, but if you've ever tried to fit a slightly oversized coffin into a burial chamber or a church transport cart, you know why it matters. Third, the wall thickness. We don't cut corners there. I've seen cheaper coffins collapse after a few years underground-especially in clay-heavy soil. Ours stay intact.
Wood options: oak (the strongest), it get a water-based finish. No toxic chemicals. A German customer once sent a sample of our coating to a lab in Munich. It came back clean-fully biodegradable. I still have that test report somewhere.
The inside lining is simple. It doesn't wrinkle, which took us a few tries to get right. The handles are stainless steel-nothing that rusts after five years in damp ground. Is it fancy? No. But it's honest work.
Can we customize it? Sure. Different fabric colors. Different handle shapes. Some families in Catholic regions of southern Germany prefer a particular look. Orthodox customers sometimes ask for extra padding. We just ask what they need and do it.
Price? Not rock-bottom. But you're not paying for a brand name either. You're paying for thicker wood, tighter joints, and someone actually checking the work before it leaves the shop.
We ship flat-packed to save on freight. Some customers assemble them locally. Some ask for finished delivery. We can do both.
Who buys these? Funeral homes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland-and a few in the US and Australia too. Some use this model as their everyday coffin. Others keep it as an affordable "German-spec" option for families who don't want to overspend.
Look, at the end of the day, a coffin has one job. It needs to hold up. It needs to be respectful. It needs to be safe for the ground. This one does all three. That's all I can promise.
