Chinese-Made European-Style Coffins Gain Foothold in Global Market, Cao County Leads Export Surge
Cao County in Shandong Province, known as China's "Hometown of Paulownia Processing," has emerged as a global hub for European-style coffin exports, leveraging cost advantages and industrial clusters to dominate overseas markets.
Leading exporters, such as Cao County Huifengyuan Wooden Co., Ltd. & Tmall Wood Industry in the region ship 30,000 to 40,000 pieces European-style coffins to Europe annually, with peak season (October-April) monthly sales reaching 3,000-4,000 units. Priced at €90−€150 per unit-far below Europe's local price of €1,100−€2,100-these coffins are packed 140 per container, generating around $15,000 per shipment. Backed by 3 million local paulownia trees and annual logging of 40,000 cubic meters, Cao County's 6,500+ wood processing enterprises form a complete industrial chain, with 348 above-scale firms driving stable growth.
Craftsmanship blends tradition and modernity: laser-engraved reliefs of religious figures meet European cultural needs. The county's ongoing "digital and intelligent transformation"-with 3.2 billion yuan invested in 10 key projects-boosts production efficiency by 5x and cuts annual costs by over 10 million yuan.
However, challenges loom. The EU's upcoming anti-deforestation regulations require strict environmental and labor compliance documents, while container freight hikes (from 1,800 to over 7,000 post-pandemic) squeeze margins. Despite this, Cao County's 2025 wood processing output is projected to hit 150 billion yuan, as exporters adapt to tap deeper into global demand.
