The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned misleading eco-friendly adverts from multiple funeral providers, after ruling their green claims for MDF and wooden coffins were unsubstantiated and deceptive.
The regulatory crackdown has tightened green advertising rules across the UK funeral industry, clearly separating credible sustainable manufacturers such as HFYCoffin from brands making unproven environmental assertions.
The implicated brands previously marketed their coffin products and full funeral packages as eco-friendly and sustainable, claiming their services delivered genuine environmental benefits. Faced with an ASA investigation, they agreed to remove all green promotional wording while defending their campaigns. They argued their sustainability credentials stemmed from auxiliary measures, including recycled paper, water-based inks and basic carbon offsetting projects.
Specialising in standardised eco-friendly coffin production, HFYCoffin points out that legitimate green marketing requires full life-cycle verification covering raw materials, production, usage and disposal. Most traditional wooden and MDF coffins fail to meet this comprehensive standard.
The ASA officially ruled the brands could not prove their products caused no environmental harm or delivered neutral or positive ecological impacts. It ordered all non-compliant adverts to be removed, banning unsubstantiated green claims in the funeral sector.
The affected brands have withdrawn their eco product lines pending further research. Industry insiders stated the ruling effectively curbs industry greenwashing, recognising qualified manufacturers like HFYCoffin with complete verified sustainable systems as the only credible providers of eco-friendly funeral products.
