Advantages of Plywood

1. Made from multiple layers of wood veneer, plywood is a very strong material to work with.

2. It won't soak up water and liquids as quickly or easily as MDF does so it's less susceptible to water damage.

3. Because it carries a grain, plywood is stainable. Which makes it perfect for kitchen cabinets, tabletops and other projects where you want a large stained wood surface.

4. It holds screws very tightly since the varying grains of wood on each layer give the screws something to hold onto.

Types of Plywood

Softwood Plywood: Usually made of cedar, spruce, fir, pine, or redwood, softwood plywood is the most common type used for construction and industrial purposes. This type can vary in the thickness and number of its plies when being used in different projects.

Hardwood Plywood: Hardwood is a stronger kind of plywood made from angiosperm trees that are valued specifically for its strength, surface hardness, and resistance to wear and tear.

Tropical Plywood: Mixed species of tropical wood make up this low-cost variety of plywood. It's generally considered superior to softwood plywood due to its higher quality, density, and strength, and the evenness of its layers.

Aircraft Plywood: High strength, aviation-grade plywood is made from mahogany or birch and uses adhesives that are more resistant to higher levels of heat and humidity so it can retain its quality even in harsher conditions.

Decorative Plywood

This type is usually faced with some kind of hardwood, such as ash, oak, birch, maple, rosewood, or mahogany, and is used for things like cabinetry, furniture, and fixtures.

Flexible Plywood

Formed from a very thin central ply and two outer pieces, flexible plywood is specifically designed with curved pieces in mind. This type is made to bend and is usually glued together once it is formed into its final shape, for a stiff finished piece.

Marine Plywood

Marine plywood is used in the construction of docks and boats, and it usually costs more than standard plywood due to the more durable face and core it must have to resist humid and wet conditions.

Plywood Ratings

There are five important ratings that convey where and how to use plywood: Exterior, Exposure 1, Exposure 2, Interior and Structural 1.

Exterior means the panels have been waterproofed by pressure treating and can withstand inclement weather. Use exterior rated plywood for permanent outdoor structures that will be exposed to water long-term.

Exposure 1 means the panels have been waterproofed and can withstand exposure to the elements during construction. These panels will hold up to several wet-dry cycles during construction because the glue is water resistant. However, they are not suitable for long-term exposure post-construction.

Exposure 2 means the panels are made with an intermediate glue that is not fully waterproof. These panels can withstand occasional moisture but are otherwise intended for interior use.

Interior means the panels are not waterproof and are designed for interior use only. They should not be exposed to moisture.

Structural 1 is rated for seismic retrofit work, meaning it is designed to be earthquake resistant. Unless they have a Structural 1 rating, other plywood panels of any width are not suited for seismic retrofitting.

Plywood Grades

There are four grades of plywood: A, B, C and D. The grade refers to the quality and appearance of the plywood's face and back veneers.

A-grade plywood features a smooth, sanded surface without knots. Any wood defects have been repaired with synthetic filler, so the veneer can be painted. A-grade plywood is ideal for furniture or cabinet doors.

B-grade plywood also features a smooth, sanded surface, but may have more repaired defects up to 1-inch across.

C-grade is unsanded and may have several minor defects that will need to be repaired with knots up to 1 1/2 inches across, discoloration and sanding defects.

D-grade is also unsanded with defects that have not been repaired and knot holes up to 2 1/2 inches across, discoloration and sanding defects.
